Papua New Guinea reportedly plans to ban Facebook for a month. Communications Minister Sam Basil announced the decision May 30 and said the move would combat a bevy of concerns about the platform. Researchers will use the shutdown to identify potential fake accounts on Facebook.

According to Basil, users who upload pornographic images and false information could be removed from the site. Basil said, “This will allow genuine people with real identities to use the social network responsibly.” The minister also indicated the country could produce a local alternative to the social media site.

He said local developers could be tapped to create a more conducive platform for the country. A Facebook spokesperson, meanwhile, said the company is attempting to address the nation’s concerns. It is unclear when the proposed blackout period for the social media platform would start. This Article is Published Written By An aiou tutor.
