Week 1 — Getting to know

Women Who Code is a community, run by women engineers in the Tech industry who are doing wonders in their careers and creating a great impact on society as well by sharing their knowledge.

“If you have knowledge ,

let others light their candles at it.” — Margaret Fuller

It all started at Google, Gurugram when I attended an event called “You, Opportunities and Everything In Between” on January 11, where they launched this Mentorship Program 2.0. It was such a great opportunity to widen my horizons on the technical front. I got to see almost all the women I adore and take inspiration from, who have impacted the tech industry greatly, and helped thousands of girls like me to navigate through our paths to become one like them. I was really very inspired to see them talking about their stories. With the launch of this Mentorship Program, I got further opportunities to get connected personally to such a nice mentor like Mansi Bareja.

My Mentor

Mansi is a final year student pursuing her graduation in Computer Engineering from NSIT, Delhi. She’s working with Goldman Sachs, Bangalore currently. She leads as the executive head at ‘Words in Worth_Live’.
She also mentored an international student in the Learn IT, Girl-Mentorship Program 2019.

About The Program

WWC Mentorship program is a 5-week long program run by women engineers to uplift the participation of women in the tech industry and create awareness about various opportunities in open source, hackathons, etc. We also learned about the power of networking and how we can leverage it to get our next big opportunity, how to effectively use LinkedIn for the same etc. A mentor is assigned to 3 mentees and based on the domain they prefer to work or learn about and on the basis of that, they are given some specific action items weekly.

The process

Firstly, I received a mail about getting selected for the mentorship program. With this news, I was really happy because for the past few months I was really looking for someone who can guide and motivate me to excel. Then I received another to connect with our mentor and a brief introductory session was done over the mail itself.

Further on the same day, we had a call to introduce us to the agenda and norms of the program. Then just the next day the mentees and our mentor had a call introducing ourselves and what we want and can do to bring the most out of this program.

We were assigned tasks to plan and make a list of all the things we want to learn and do in the upcoming four weeks.

A goal without a plan is just a wish — Antoine de Saint-Exupery

I am really looking forward to gaining more and more out of this program and scaling up myself and stepping out of my comfort zone in this ever-growing tech industry.

That was all about how our first week. See you in the next blog.
