Black History Month is a special time of year in America when white people get to complain about the fact that there is no “white history month”. Funny, that they never stopped to think that maybe white history month is every month except February. Turns out, the less a white person knows about black history, the more likely they are to have a problem with black history. Likewise, a white person who works crushing, blue collar labor jobs is less likely to feel sympathy for black people.

Truth be told, there is some degree of ‘white guilt’, in some segments of the population. This white guilt is more likely to pop up in upper and middle-class households. White guilt, however isn’t necessarily a bad thing. In all likelihood, a sense of guilt was what motivated white people to help end slavery and segregation.

Some historians of the United States argue that a working class that was divided along racial lines contributed to the fact that the USA is the only industrialized nation in the world that doesn’t have a Labour/socialist/worker’s political party to directly represent the proletariat in politics. The trick is in getting poor white people to identify with poor black people.

But, what about middle-class, white people like myself? Well, I do come from a working class background. I don’t go out of my way to try and heal race relations. I defend black people once in a while, but it usually is because I started off defending poor people to begin with. As you can already tell, I’m definitely to the Left on most social issues. Unfortunately, people on the Right often bring up illegitimacy and illiteracy rates in the black population and compare them to whites. When a white person gets really racist, explicitly so, I don’t correct them. For sure, I lose respect for them and will make fun of them behind their backs. So, thanks for reading. Please comment.
