Hello guys, My name is Pan Sutheera Nithibunhiran. Now, I’m a fourth-year student and studying in Information Technology, King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi or familiar name that is IT Bangmod. In this blog, I will share experience in design internship for 2 months at Taskworld.
The first step to an internship
According to my faculty had ‘SIT Career day 2018’ Fair. There are a lot of famous companies that we can apply for a job or internship by complete our basic profile with any company that we are interested in. After that, some of them (maybe all) might contact us for interview. In this event, Taskworld has come to the booth and announce to recruit an apprentice to get the design as well. With no longer wait, I completed my profile and attached my portfolio link. Then, I have to wait.
The interview is not so easy as you think.
After I got an interview date for interview, I felt more excited. That’s because of this interview in English. Why did I feel like that? Because this interview is in ENGLISH. Normally, I hardly communicate in English, So it was quite difficult to me. Being more nervous and I tried hard to prepare for it. The interview will have 3 rounds.
- First, I was interviewed by the team that I choose for the internship. This interview round, it was about ‘what can I do there?’ They asked me about my work experience and another question like activity that I had done in the university.
- Second, This interview round, it was about personality, hobbies and favorite things. The question about resolution skills that can occur in the workplace that make me felt challenge myself to answer this question. — the challenge was the problem solving skill question when I face the problem. ( It liked my breath was taken away)
- Third, it was about a general interview that can I work with this organization? Can I adjust to the company’s environment?
When passed through three step, Let’s get started to work!
Why I choose training in design?
With my performance and passion that made me done with a variety of design and normally, I am interested in UX/UI. So, I want to know in the detail of UX/UI. Namju(Designer team lead) explained about our design team has divided into subfield. There are include, UX Design, UI Design, and Marketing Design. For the first time, I chose to intern in UX/UI, but I want to know about what the Marketing Design do. So, I can’t decide to choose the major field for the intern. Then, I told to Namju that I was interested and wanted to practice at all.
8 Weeks 4 Mentors
For the first day, Namju gave the plan and explain that in 2 months(June — July) What did I have to do and taught by whom?
1st-2nd Week: Mentor P’Ploypim and the Marketing design
In the Marketing Design, I learned about offline media such as brochure or advertising on a magazine and online media such as Landing page, Banners ads, User Interface, Online Marketing Ads, and Web User Interface design something like this. Actually, the marketing team also analyzes user traffic usage. Why should we analyze this? In order to observe which pages has most attention? Where do users has more interact? or what are steps that users use until the end? Or even improve the user interface of our website provides information, good looking and attract people to the site. That makes people choose and use our product. For the tasks that are done in this part are:
- Pricing plan in France language — This work has to present the pricing plan to customers and shows the detail on one page. Moreover, it has a lot of content when I design the pricing plan, I must to think about content the first.
- Landing page Taskworld vs. Jooto — This page is designed to compare the feature of Taskworld with Jooto of Japan that would make a customer see the comparison and may help customers decide to use the product of Taskworld.
- Banner for post on linkedin and Banner for post on Le Figaro — That is the first banner for promoting Taskworld in job search sites like LinkedIn. Another banner is .gif type to present brief content and make people who are interested will continue reading it and know that how would Taskworld help their organization.
- 1 page magazine — one page for advertising Taskworld in the magazine of France.
- Product page — That is an important page to present about feature and ability of Taskworld completely. The original version had some points where the interaction with the user is difficult. So, I had to redesign this page and has information completely. Moreover, It could make the user read and has interacted with this page increasingly.
3rd Week: Mentor Namju and the Product Design
This week, have 2 main problems are included
- Collect component that is used in our product. — I had to collect component them to update branding guideline for making designer and developer work out more consistent.
- Focus state — Sometimes, if the user can’t use a mouse or they prefer to press a button tab that’s why we need to design that if the use of the tab press and component in the product will show how to user know that now what step is active?
4th-5th Weeks: Mentor P’Sun and the UX process
Learning to do user journey map and improving the experience. We will take the informed problem to analyze. Exactly, what caused those problems and how to resolve it? For this part, P’Sun is the main mentor and also P’Ai gave several suggestions like an interesting idea that can be further developed. And the first work in this part is..
- Server selection is hidden — This issue is from some user who failed in login. That made user misunderstand because their email or password was wrong or what happened to the login. However, when the users have contacted to support to understand login must choose a server that matches the first time their register. But the weakness was selected server because server selection was below the white frame and it not to the attention of a user. From the problem, we need to resolve and make it easier to see and the user knows how to choose a server to match when the registered account.
How we resolve this? The easy step started with
- Analyze problems. In this process, we use the user journey map for help this process.
- Examine logic. What would happen on the login page? For example, if the invalid email address , invalid password, or selected the wrong server. How could we inform to users?
- Find the other sites that are similar to our flow. It might be the site that has the login and must choose a server. If the user fails to login, How their manage this problem?
- Summary of the cause of the problem.
- Think of ways to resolve. P’Sun and I have figured out how to fix it with various formats. After talking with the developer, we got the clear solution. The server will be selected by base on current location, and the server will be matched the last time the login. Moreover, we will change the position of the server selection move up to in white frame position that user is most easily seen.
- Modify the UI that depends on how we choose to do, Which part of our UI that need to adjust?
- Make a prototype and user testing to see whether the effects of having to find a way to fix and adjust to the UI. Did it truly solve the problem on relevant implementation?
- Summary of solving.
- Take it to develop further.
For the UX and another thing to do is to research along what we are doing or solving the problems. To help us develop and improve the things that make a good product. Remember to think about the user. Next to another task is…
- Onboarding improvement — In this part, I did not do anything much. What is Onboarding? Onboarding is when the user in the Taskworld systems for the first time, What are things that user have to learn? For example, When signing up for an account, you will see the first step for a suggestion that the user can create a task from here. How can user assign a task to a team? The user can complete a task from here and if the user needs more help, they could click here. It was like a guideline for the user knows how to use. From the original version may also not answer user much, we must think about finding new ways to do better than the original and make the user also understands how to use it easily from the first time.
6th-7th Weeks: Deez mentor P’Earth Earth and the Visual and Interaction Design
From UX Design that we have resolved the problem on the page already. In this part, we will redesign log in and sign up on the page to be more beautiful. The important thing is we must consider flow of the original sign up page. In this part, we will find the ideas in the design that are popular. What are the advantages and disadvantages? In the afternoon daily, P’Earth had taught about UI design or other related topics.(P’Earth is a very good teacher!) Including talking that we will redesign the sign up and log in on page in any style as well.
P’Earth assigned some exercise in After Effect that is creating a transition to invite colleagues when pressing the invite by email That is a simple transition. If press this button, how will it display? In order to design and make the developer envisioned transition. (Be the first time to use After Effect, because I have never used it before. It was interesting to try something new! Deez cool loey)
Another exercise is the icon font. We made it simple and easy to design. It was also easier for developer to use icon font for work because it is a real font! In addition to making it more organized. For making font icon, we will have a template that is used to design the icon font in the appropriate size. In designing icon font, we must know that we will place this icon near the icon format, and must design it to be similar sized icon with all over the icon.
8th Week: Mentor Namju and the Defining success criteria
In the last week, Namju had seen my work that it was improved and design in the part of UX process and visual design. Which point should improve more? Which point must we make it match with a component that we have? Moreover, Namju has reviewed the work of the design process that started until the ended of handing work on the relevant team.
Something that I have learned outside the classroom.
There are many things to learn. So, I chose from the main topics are included.
- Branding design
- Tool for analysis of user traffic such as Google Analytic and Hotjar.
- AB Testing
- User Journey Mapping
- Tool for user testing such as usertesting.com and validately.com
- To make the prototype like a proto.io
- Design principle
- Animation principle
- UI design with consideration of responsive screen and font size.
- To make the icon font such as icomoon.io / iconutopia.com / uxplanet.org
- To make basic transition with After Effect.
- Branding guideline
- Focus state
- State UI element
Because here is Taskworld.
If talking about work, of course, talk is important especially to meet within the team. Also, there is a sprint planning meeting with PO to release or even a meeting of these team leader. In every month, we will have a QA Session, for everyone in the office, question or suggestion and then talk. There is something to improve and also something it have not to and some that should continue. It makes us open-mind to listen to the opinions of many people as well.
Additional facilities at the office. In addition to the workplace environment, there is also a place for breakfast, snacks, and beverages available throughout the day. There is also the favorite game that is Smash here. There will be room for a peaceful setting for a relaxing sleep to be used during the day.
People here are truly friendly and kind and have a topic to talk all the time. The most of people are cat lover too!!
As for the food, Absolutely that around the Phloen Chit neighborhood has many kinds of restaurants. For example, Soi Maha Thun, food court all seasons, The market near Krungsri Bank, or even Central Embassy.
For every Friday will have Free Food Fridays will be providing 300 baht each person to be able to go to famous restaurants. The greatest personal favorite is Tonkatsu Wako. When I ate the first time I felt melted down on the floor.
The other restaurant that makes me feel doubt in my mouth is PEPINA at Central Embassy.
Cause I tried to order some menu of pizza and it has ingredient with lamb sausage… Yes, It is lamb sausage. Umm, for the first time, I think it delicious but when I ate many times, I think I couldn’t eat it anymore. There also a variety of great taste pizza . If you like Italian food, you can’t miss it.
The good impression from Taskworld
Fortunately, that the given opportunity with the Taskworld made me learn new things and developed myself increasingly in both works. Experience from many seniors get advice and convey to me is really valuable!! Moreover, I also has learnt to adapt to others that may not be familiar to me because this is how the world actually works, everyone is very professional, hilarious and entertaining. Mostly like to try the new restaurant around the Phloen Chit neighborhood. However, the internship also gave many valuable things to me. It’s not like I stole the iMac back home but they are knowledge and friendship from anyone at Taskworld.
Thank you everyone at Taskworld. Thank you design team that was not only assign the task to me. Even Namju, P’Sun, P’Ai, P’Earth, and P’Ploy. They always taught various opinions and knowledge. Taskworld is the best place for the internship and this place gave a good thing and most impressive to me.
