The Secret Garden

The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett

Disclaimer — Spoillers Ahead !!!

I have read this book several times. Today when I finished it for umpteenth time, I realised that every time, I find something new in the book. Today I was focusing on the similarities between Mary, Colin, and the garden. They all were forgotten and had no one to take care of them. However, as Mary begins the task of reviving the garden, changes start happening in her and Colin’s life as well.

To revive the garden we need to remove the weeds (negative influences of our lives). And then a little bit of rain and a little sunshine helps strengthen the roots and guides it to rise to the ground with vibrant colors and full of life.

We all just need a little space to grow and a little bit of loving nourishement.

The book always makes me yearn for miles and miles of open space with birds and animals and beautiful gardens undisturbed by the so called modern aminities.

This story of Mary is incomplete without the Robin and Dickon and his army of tamed creatures.

Another thing that touched me was the concept of Magic as told by Colin. He says very simple that he wants to do Scientific Discoveries and since he did not know what everything was called, he called it Magic. And that made me wonder that Magic is nothing but unexplained Sceince.

I love Frances Hodgson Burnett’s books. His books are written for children but even as an adult, I feel like I learn a lot from them. Somewhere I read that a children’s book which can not be enjoyed by adults is not a good children’s book. After reading these books, I can not help but agree wholeheartedly.
