BAND Linkin Park
the song was released as the third single from their second studio album, Meteora (2003) and is the final track of the album. One of Linkin Park’s most well known and critically acclaimed songs, “numb” topped the Billboard Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart for 12 weeks. the song spent six weeks at the top of the chart in 2003 and six weeks in 2004. the song also spent three weeks atop Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and peaked at number 11 on the Billboard Hot100.
the official video was directed by Joe Hahn (DJ of the band) all the scenes of the video were recorded in Prague Czech Republic. but due to vocalist Chester Bennington suffering from severe abdominal and back pains, the band’s performance at church was filmed later in a matching cathedral in Los Angles.
the video deals with bullying and self-harm. the video is also targeted towards teenagers and adults. the color tone of the video is quite dull very cold colors have been used throughout the video. bright colors were avoided as it is common style of rock music videos. the band members too are wearing dark coloured clothes, this helps them to establish their star image.
jump cuts were used throughout the video show band’s performance and then back to the narrative.
the narrative is about a misfit girl (the role played by Briana Evigan) who is basically just tired of those who are around her. this is a very common theme for rock music videos as it is mostly about the misfits in the society who want to break free from the normal flow of life. throughout the video she is constantly seen being ignored and mocked by her friends and other people. In many shots one can see the world around the girl going fast while she’s the only one moving normally which represents that she’s different and is lost in her own world. shots of her drawing during class clearly portrays the fact that she’s interested in art but she’s being forced to study which is not her area of interest.
the location used for the church and the religious statue used in the video shows the symbolic code of faith and enlightenment which relates to the narrative. the girl is seeking help and towards the end of the video she is shown rushing towards which represents she is desperate for help and it also represents as if she heard the band and immediately connected with them believing in the thought that they might help her out of this ocean of sorrow and darkness. the shot that shows the girl sketching religious figure also shows her devotion towards art and religion. she probably dreams of becoming an artist rather than following the same path that other people follow like robots on a production line. the video concludes with the girl walking across a bridge.
