its a half-length portrait of a woman done during a period of 1503 and 1506 and perhaps worked on it till 1517 with il on a white Lombardy Poplar Panel. the painting is one of the most written about, most sung about, most visited and the most parodied work of art of all time. it is believed that the portrait is of Lisa Del Giocondo, wife of florentine businessman Francesco Del Giocondo. da vinci used a pyramid design to place the woman simply and calmly in the space of the painting. he used the simple formula of a seated woman which was used mainly for paintings of madonna and were really popular at that time.

the painting was done in 1495–1499 with tempera on gesso, pitch and mastic. the painting depicts the last supper of jesus with his 12 disciples when he also declares that one of them would betray him as it is told in the Gospel of John, 13:21. due to the methods used, and a variety of environmental factors, as well as intentional damage, very little of the painting remains today, despite numerous restoration attempts, the last attempt being completed in 1999. the painting covers an end wall of the dining hall at the monastery of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, Italy. the painting was commissioned by Sforza to be the centrepiece of the mausoleum. the opposite wall of the refectory is covered by the Crucifixion fresco by Giovanni Donato da Montorfano, to which leonardo added figures of the Sforza family in tempera. (these figures have deteriorated in much the same way as has The Last Supper.)
