Ritual

Brush my hair 65 strokes with a pink padded brush
Walk my dog four times a day
Make a pot of coffee that I end up wasting
Water my garden by 8 AM (even when it rains)
Check my iMessages, then my Instagram, then my Facebook, the weather
(never the news)
Take an hour to eat my yogurt at my work desk
Twist my nose ring on the walk to my car
Forget to eat dinner then binge on fruit or beer
Set five alarms for the following day
Kneel and talk to the moon above me
Light an incense before I climb into bed
A song, a chant, a prayer each night
I do all of these things in the hopes that someday, maybe
You, too, will be a part of my everyday
and finally, then, I can just
breathe
