5 to 9

I’ve recently finished watching the Japanese drama 5 to 9, based on the manga of the same title. It follows the story of Sakuraba Junko, an English language teacher who receives a marriage proposal from a monk, Hoshikawa Takane. She’s reluctant at first — after all how can she achieve her dream of living the big life in New York if she accepts the monk and decides to live in a buddhist temple?

The drama is quirky and sweet — as to be expected from a drama that’s aimed at women in their 20s. There are interesting side characters that help drive some of the plot, even if they can come across as generally flat.

I’m also totally in love with the actress who plays Junko, Ishihara Satomi.

Personally, I generally liked the drama, even though I had weird feelings about how Momoe Yamabuchi, one of Junko’s friends, who is obsessed with boys love manga was portrayed, but that’s a story for another day.

Score: 3.5/5
