It’s More Than Just Coffee To Some People……..

In the past few days, there have been a couple of incidents of racism at Starbucks going viral. The big one was the two guys getting arrested for sitting in the Starbucks, but then there is an incident in which a Starbucks manager refuses to let a black man use their restroom without making a purchase when they just let a white man do the same exact thing.

It’s 2018, and black people aren’t allowed to sit in coffee shops. Some managers at Starbucks think bathrooms are for white people only. Not 1948, but 2018. I’m amazed I had to type that.

Now personally I’m probably not going to actually boycott Starbucks. In the past and as of now, they are willing to lose money to show they aren’t ok with racism in their stores.

HOWEVER, the is racism in their stores. That racism is in the management there. Those racist managers have the ability to hire and fire POC and make their lives hell. They have the ability to give black customers, who have money to pay for their overpriced coffee and food (I know, I’m one of them….I stay gold status on the rewards program) a less than stellar experience because their racism means they don’t think black folks money is worth as much as white folks money.

We all know that in a lot of big companies there is a disconnect between upper management and lower management. Upper management is saying and espousing one thing, but that lower management is doing something else, and maybe that’s what Starbucks is going to address on May 29th.

IF PEOPLE WANT TO BOYCOTT THAT, STOP BEING MAD ABOUT IT.

We live in the era of Trump. White nationalists are running their mouths and the streets because they feel they have made America great again by electing that senior citizen with the mind of a toddler in the white house. We still have cops shooting black folks without repercussion.

We’re allowed to be on high alert here and if you feel it’s stupid for folks to be upset about racist management in Starbucks…..ask yourself why?

If you’re more vocal about being mad folks are boycotting Starbucks than about Starbucks employees calling the cops on folks and cops acting a whole damn fool detaining black men for “trespassing”….then we need to look at why that is.

Go get your White Chocolate Mocha or Iced Caramel Machiatto. Ain’t no one stopping you, but don’t get mad folks don’t want to accompany you there afraid they will get treated like crap, or worse arrested because being black offends SOME Starbucks employees.

YOU DON’T GET TO DETERMINE WHAT IS AN APPROPRIATE BOYCOTT AND WHAT ISN’T.
