You’ve Just Got To Start

Lessons learned from a failed business venture and how to start again.

So last year I tried to start a production company and it failed, it failed miserably, and for the longest time I just felt like I was a failure. But it’s been a year and at some point I just had to stop feeling that way because life moves on, and you just have to move on with it. So here I am, round two of starting my business and that’s where the blogging comes along. I will be documenting the entire process of starting a business, running a business, and at the same time providing tutorials, product reviews, tips and tricks in film-making, photography and all aspects of storytelling. My hope is to build a community of people that just want to tell great stories. And yes, my end goal is still to build a production company that creates original content, but the mission of this business is to raise up strong storytellers.

What my typical day looks like:

(4am) Typically after I finish my morning routine (coffee, walking the dogs, more coffee, devotional time, lots of coffee, stretches, all the coffee) I try to get a little work done by planning ahead.

(8am) So yes, I do work a full time job. And when I’m at work, I’m at work, so I have to wait until lunch to do any business stuff. The thing about doing a business while working a full time job is that you have to honor your full time job.

(Midday) So now I’m on lunch, and this is when I get to work on my own stuff and is often an opportunity for me to catch up with clients. Sometimes you have to talk to the client so that they understand your reasoning for your videos and for your edits. Sometimes the client won’t agree with me and sometimes I won’t agree with them but we generally come to an agreement and that’s all about collaboration.

(5:30pm) Now I’m home which is an awesome time for me because it’s family time!

(10pm) Well I thought today went pretty well, got a lot of work done and had a lot of fun and I’m just finishing up with some work tonight.

The cool thing about doing this first blog is that I’ve learnt a huge lesson and that’s to just start. Whatever your passion is, whether it is film or photography or graphic design, writing, dancing or fashion, whatever it is, you just have to start.

Alright, I’m tired and I’ve got to go to bed. Just set my alarm for four o clock in the morning — gonna do this all over again. Anyway, thanks for reading, don’t forget to follow and comment below. Peace.
