Interesting take! The idea on the audience being different on Instagram and Snapchat is thought provoking. Though, I would imagine that the demographics on both the channels would be the same (young people), Instagram is definitely more about vanity than Snapchat.

The advantage for Instagram to pulling this off might be they have a lot more influencers on the platform with followers.
