Inspiration Corner — Mike Gabelmann
Today we have with us Mike Gabelmann, who’s a photographer specializing in nature photography. He graduated with Honours in Photography from Algonquin College in Ottawa.
Mike has been taking photographs for most of his life and started with a Kodak Brownie camera given to him by his parents. Over the years Mike has used 35mm, medium and large format cameras. Currently Mike uses a digital SLR camera for all his work.
Mike has experience in many areas of photography including weddings, portraits, model, nature, landscapes, macro, commercial, environmental and journalism. Mike started his professional career as a Parliamentary Photographer in Ottawa.
Mike recently had a photograph in the Sooke Fine Art Show and had several photographs published in a book.
How and when did you start photography?
I started taking photographs at a young age when my parents gave me a Kodak camera to play with. I took photos of my friends and the environment around me. In high school I did some darkroom work.
What all social platforms are you active on?
I am active on Flickr, Google+ and 500px. I have recently started an Instagram account. I actively participate in several local photography clubs, sharing my experience with others. I release my images under a Creative Commons license.
What kind of photography do you enjoy the most?
I like to experiment with many genres of photography, some might call me a generalist. I started in journalism and then migrated into portraits, glamour and weddings. At the moment I am doing nature photography.
Any advice you would like to share with our photographer readers?
Carry a camera with you everywhere, something special is happening right around the corner.
How did you like the Siftr experience?
I think Siftr is great! It is extremely easy to organize and group photos into portfolios. I love the simple and clean nature of the Siftr website. Images are the emphasis and there are no distracting elements. I also do not have to upload images as it pulls them from my social media sites. I would like to be able to move photos from one collection to another or add keywords to do that automatically.
Anything else that you want to share with your viewers or Siftr team?
Keep up the great work!
Siftr Team would like to thank Mike for giving us time and sharing his thoughts and experiences. It’s been a pleasure.
