Paper Dreams of Ayumi Shibata
We collaborated with Ayumi Shibata as a part of Sikoba’s brand identity because we feel inspired by the intricate skill, simplicity, amazing beauty and deep meanings concealed in her paper cuttings. With her art, Ayumi wants to create a discussion about how we relate to and care about the world we have been given.
We would like to express our appreciation and gratitude to Ayumi for allowing us to feature her work!
Born in Yokohama, Japan Ayumi Shibata uses traditional methods of Japanese paper cutting. Ayumi attempts to construct a sculptural dialogue about the delicate relationship we as humans have with the environment and the natural forces of our world, while also relating to the Japanese translation of “paper.”
In Japanese, the word “Kami,” means not only “paper” but also “god,” “divinity,” or “spirit.” Kami are omnipresent in the Shinto religion and reside in the sky, ground, trees, and rocks.
Ayumi creates both elaborate miniature creations and immersive, life-sized installations. For her, white paper is a portal into a world of dreams, and everything her knife touches start to breathe with a new magical life.
