12+1 Children’s Flea markets

on the Silver Coast

If you are looking to supply your children with toys, clothes and other accessories in Switzerland without breaking the bank, Flohmi’s (flea markets) will probably become your best friends. The bigger ones (such as the one organized by Hoki in Horgen) can be recognized from afar by the lack of parking places in the area and some devoted mamas that arrive already an hour before the doors open. These events can become quite competitive, as everyone wants to get the best items first, but they are also a lot of fun!

I personally prefer the smaller markets. The big ones might have a LOT to offer (and usually have a coffee and cake corner, where bored children wait for their mother), but these petite markets are less stressful and have a smaller line for paying in the end.

A few tips:

• If you are going to one of these events don’t forget to bring a big bag where you can throw in everything you like. Before you go to pay for your items you can review what you found and decide which ones you really need.
• Decide in advance what you aim for. Some things (like good shoes, coats, snowsuits, pushchairs) tend to go faster. If you know what’s the most important thing on your list, you can start with that section of the market.
• If you do end up at one of the big Flohmi’s, I would recommend to pick what you want as fast as you can, then go have a coffee and cake instead of standing in line :)
