As someone who grew up in a town with a population of 12 (4 of them were my family), I can relate to this story pretty deeply. Even with the internet, there’s an insularity and a disconnect from society that is difficult to put into words. I was 18 the first time I ever heard anyone speak the words “I’m an athiest”, and was genuinely shocked.
