The Little Gaps

When I have a regular schedule, it’s easy to fall into the trap of planning for everything, even relaxation. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but unless I explicitly set aside time to aimlessly walk around, or sit somewhere, or do nothing to clear my head, it may not happen on its own.

But when I do something new or unexpected — something that doesn’t fit neatly into my regular day to day — it leads to these wonderful little gaps of time. Gaps that are too long for me to already start hustling to my next destination, and too short to insert a new “productive” activity. It’s just enough time to enjoy those spontaneous moments of relative nothingness.

And look! I even used the time to write a Medium post about it, something I haven’t done in a while. Lesson to self: Do more new things. Say yes to the unexpected. The little gaps are worth it.
