Great article. As a researcher in the field, I would however stress it was more the tireless work of Geoff Hinton, Yoshua Bengio and Yan LeCunn that kept working on deep learning despite a lack of interest from the rest of the field that resulted in the recent resurgence of interest in the field, as they (particularly Hinton’s group) started to produce huge gains in accuracy on a number of key problems, starting with computer vision. Google deserves credit for a lot of things, and certainly have played their part in popularizing deep learning (as have Facebook — FAIR), but the real credit belongs to these researchers, and other luminaries like Jurgen Schidhuber (whose contribution is very undeservedly under-appreciated).
