I was once a structural/civil engineer and now am a software engineer/developer/IT person. I have to disagree here – that is exactly how an engineer works.

In fact that’s the reason I go out of the industry: I was sick to death of constant menial calculation of every little detail. I think software does a great job of reusability and abstraction, and to me structural engineering is in the dark ages.
