3 Things I miss since giving up Facebook & 1000 things I don’t
I gave up Facebook a couple of weeks ago. At first I thought I would just take a 24 hour break, but a funny thing happened, I didn’t miss it.
Sure there was a reflex action to open the app on my phone but I deleted the app and that stopped.
The reason I gave up Facebook had mostly to do with the reasons I had an account. To stay in touch with people, share news, share thoughts about the world, the same stuff everyone else does.
But in the weeks preceding my deactivating my account I’d found Facebook becoming an increasingly hostile environment.
I was threatened — which didn’t bother me as much as annoy me because I knew it was just posturing. I was told I should leave US and go home, simply because I dared to suggest all was not right with the country and then had my head bitten off when I made a suggestion to someone on how to use a feature in an app!
I was done. I am done. I’m done with having to defend myself, deal with stupidity and an attitude of self-righteousness.
So three things I miss:
1. Local Facebook groups, they were handy for finding things out that are going on locally.
2. The amusing stories friends told about their kids. Those never failed to put a smile on my face.
3. The universal login for other websites.
Yep that’s it.
The 1000's of things I don’t miss… no I’m not going to list those, that would be ridiculous.
I kept Facebook messenger as some of my contacts us that to touch base.
The interesting part is that no one has contacted me to ask where I am 😃 which sort of illustrates the point about social networks.
So now I hangout on Instagram — which as a photographer is a much more useful and fulfilling network (simonsaltphoto)
I’m not suggesting you give up Facebook but think of the reasons why you keep it, is it really as important as you think or does it just seem that way?
