Stop focusing on audience growth for your newsletter.
Do this instead.
I came across this post from Jeff Felten yesterday:
‘Building an audience’ is a grave mistake.
Build instead:
• authority
• credibility
• reputation
A true audience of fans is a byproduct of doing these things consistently over time. Most folks get it backwards.
- Jeff Felten
Since everything in my brain these days runs through a filter of “how does this apply to my newsletter people?”, it got me to thinking…
Should we stop focusing on “audience growth”?
I know that growth for the sake of growth just makes it another vanity metric. If our only goal of having more subscribers, more followers, and more “fans” is to see that number keep growing, what’s the point?
It’s an easy trap to fall into — and one that I’m guilt of.
I’ll post on social media about the latest issue of my newsletter and comment about how awesome it is to have XXX subscribers.
