Hi Mark,

It is interesting to look at the actual declarations the southern states used when announcing secession. They directly name slavery as their reason for their decision. Some, like Texas also clearly state a belief in white supremacy. One of the leaders in Georgia’s conference to vote for secession expressed fear that if blacks were freed, white would be displaced. These are all records presented at the time of secession. After the war, a number of high profile individuals in the south, such as Lee and others, put together materials to console their losses, which is understandable. A theme from these writings emerged, which is known as “Lost Cause” revisionist logic. The overarching themes are exactly as Rhett described. I also grew up in the Deep South and hear these same stories, which have been passed on from one generation to the next. It is also considered to be true (with no evidence) that the reason some of the revisionist logic made it into textbooks was to appeal to a larger audience (publishers generally being in the north and wanted to sell books nationally).
