Named by the Japan Meteorological Agency: 令和6年能登半島地震

The 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake was a magnitude 7.5 earthquake in the north of Noto Peninsula at 16:10 Japan Central Standard Time on January 1 2024, at a depth of about 10km. This led to a tsunami forecast by the Japan Meteorological Agency in the following prefectures: Hokkaido, Aomori Prefecture, Akita Prefecture, Yamagata Prefecture, Niigata Prefecture, Toyama Prefecture, Ishikawa Prefecture, Fukui Prefecture, Kyoto Prefecture, Hyogo Prefecture, Tottori Prefecture, Shimane Prefecture, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Fukuoka Prefecture, Saga Prefecture, and Nagasaki Prefecture. The tallest wave hit the coast in the City of Wajima in Ishikawa Prefecture and was measured at 1.2m.

As of January 3 2024, 73 people have died, 392 people were injured, and 15 people are still missing as a result of this earthquake.
