Gastritis is a general term for a group of conditions with one thing in common: Inflammation of the lining of the stomach.

Gastritis inflammation is almost always the result of infection with the same bacteria that cause most stomach ulcers, or regular use of certain pain relievers. Drinking too much alcohol can also cause gastritis.

Symptoms

  • The signs and symptoms of gastritis include:
  • Gnawing or burning ache or pain (indigestion) in your upper abdomen that may become either worse or better with eating
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • A feeling of fullness in your upper abdomen after eating

Gastritis doesn’t always cause signs and symptoms.

Gastritis can occur suddenly (acute gastritis) or develop slowly over time (chronic gastritis). In some cases, gastritis can lead to an increased risk of ulcers and stomach cancer. However, for most people, gastritis is not serious and improves quickly with treatment. when to see a doctor

Almost everyone has experienced indigestion or stomach discomfort. Most cases of dyspepsia are short-lived and do not require medical attention. If signs and symptoms of gastritis persist for more than a week, consult your doctor.

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience severe pain, vomit uncontrollably, or feel light-headed or dizzy. Talk to your doctor if you have an upset stomach after taking prescription or over-the-counter medications, especially aspirin or other pain relievers. If you vomit blood, have blood in your stool, or have black stool, see your doctor right away to determine the cause.
