The SolaiMurugan Temple in Pazhamudircholai, Madurai, is one of the 6 divine abodes of Lord Muruga, as mentioned by Nakkeerar in his Tamil Poem Tirumurukaatruppadai. Although it is the last among the Arupadaiveedugal, it attracts plenty of devotees with the lush green flora and fauna that surrounds the temple. Alike other temples, this is also situated in a small hill above the Azhagar Temple, which is around 19 km northern outskirts of Madurai city. The pleasing wooded hill has other names like Idabagiri and Vrishabadri.

Pazhamudircholai Solaimalai Murugan temple is the only temple in Arupadai Veedugal with both his consorts, Devaiyanai and Valli.

History

Avvaiyar, the legendary Tamil poetess, started to gain pride because of her dexterity in the language and the right choice of words in her poems. Lord Murugan wanted to teach her a lesson and appeared as a 10 years old boy in this place.

Avviayar was walking around the way and was thirsty and hungry, while Lord Murugan in the form of a small cowboy stood on a Jamun (Naaval) tree. Murugan asked if she would like to eat some fruits. The incredibly knowledgeable Avvaiyar was excited and said that she wanted some.

The boy asked if she wanted roasted fruit or unroasted fruit. Avvaiyar was little confused as no fruit is available in the roasted form, yet she thought that the body was ignorant of fruits. Further, she was tired to argue and asked for unroasted fruits. Smilingly, the boy shook the tree and many fruits fell down and Avvaiyar collected them all.

Since the fruits were coated with the sand, she blew to remove it. Looking at her action, the boy said that only the roasted fruits are hot and asked that why she should cool down the unroasted fruit by blowing it.

Avvaiyar was humbled by the clever wordplay and great poetic knowledge of the cowboy. However, she wondered if that was his true identity and asked him the same. Lord Murugan revealed his original image and Avvaiyar humbly bowed, as she realized the power of infinite knowledge. She wanted Lord Murugan to bless with success, in her endeavor to obtain the endless knowledge.
