Defiance Dayne is a divorced, desperate, and destitute former restaurateur. She’s at rock bottom when she receives a letter from a lawyer in Salem, Massachusetts, informing her that she has been bequeathed a house by a woman she’s never met. Defiance doesn’t know why this woman would leave her a house, but she’s curious enough to go check it out.
When Defiance arrives in Salem, she’s immediately struck by the town’s history and atmosphere. She also feels a strange connection to the house, even though it’s in disrepair. As she starts to explore the house, she begins to have strange experiences. She sees things out of the corner of her eye, and she hears voices that no one else can hear.
Defiance soon realizes that the house is not what it seems. It’s a portal to another world, a world where magic is real and anything is possible. Defiance is thrust into this new world, and she must learn to use her newfound powers to survive.
