Webster Awards 2015
The 2015 Webster Awards were held at the Hyatt Regency on November 4th. The emcee for the evening was Chris Gailus of Global BC, who did a fabulous job. The night was entertaining as the who’s who of Vancouver’s journalism scene were all there. Popular television personalities such as Dawna Friesen, Mike Killeen and Jill Krop are just some of the talent that was in the room. It was an interesting experience as a BCIT Broadcast student, to see our inspirations let loose and have a laugh. The most surprising thing was that these personalities were all so gracious and nice! They spoke to us and were not condescending at all which took many journalism students by surprise! Another great highlight of the evening was Mohamed Fahmy, who received a standing ovation from the audience. Fahmy was very sweet to guests who were asking for a minute of his time and a selfie or two. Gary Mason of the Globe and Mail, was awarded the Bill Hutchison Lifetime Achievement Award. Mason left an impact on the audience as he gave such a warm and heartfelt speech. Mason spoke of his family which was definitely a tearful moment for many in the audience. As a journalism student, it was a great opportunity to meet some of the people we have looked up to. Talking to these “famous” personalities put this whole roller coaster of journalism school into perspective. I definitely cannot wait to become a broadcast journalist.
