What is Edge Protection in Construction?

Edge protection refers to a safety system installed around the perimeter of a roof to protect workers against falls from heights. It comprises of various components such as brackets, posts, and rails, typically constructed from steel, aluminium, or timber.

Most common causes of injuries and fatalities on construction sites

The implementation of edge protection has become mandatory due to the alarming number of fatalities resulting from falls on Australian construction sites. The most severe and deadly falls occur from roofs, ladders, and scaffolds, often from heights below 4 meters.

When it is not feasible to eliminate the need to work on a roof, the most effective preventive measure against falls over roof edges is the installation of physical guardrails. There are numerous temporary edge protection systems available in the market, designed for a wide range of roof types. Additionally, it is essential to employ physical barriers like temporary edge protection or covers in situations where fragile roof surfaces, such as skylights and polycarbonate sheeting, could pose a fall hazard.

Choosing the Right Edge Protection System

  1. The edge protection system should provide a safe way for people to access and exit the roof without having to step over or through the system.
  2. The system needs to meet certain standards (AS/NZS 4994.1) for design, manufacture, and testing.
  3. It should be possible to install and dismantle the system for your specific roof following the guidelines in AS/NZS 4994.1.
  4. The manufacturer should provide clear instructions on how to use the system correctly, including safe installation and dismantling procedures, suitable configurations, compatible roof types, and any limitations of the system.
  5. The site should have enough space to safely install and dismantle the system.
  6. The edge protection system should be compatible with the structure supporting the roof and capable of maintaining its intended strength and integrity.
  7. The system should be able to follow the profile of the roof without leaving any gaps that could lead to a person falling through. Buildings with unique plan profiles or roof constructions may present additional risks that need to be addressed.
