Review: This book provides a window into Minnesota’s environmental movement in the 1970s, a key moment for environmentalism both there and elsewhere. While his biggest personal role came as executive director of the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, Grant Merritt also served as an environmental lawyer in private practice. The events are important, and he has a unique perspective on them. That said, he often fails to provide sufficient context for readers who are unfamiliar with Minnesota’s political figures, political landscape, and issues. The way he has organized the book does not help make those issues any more clear.
The book has three long chapters, of 30, 87, and 50 pages. Each discusses several different topics, and Merritt really should have divided them up. The first chapter discusses his family history in the Iron Range and a well-known dispute with Rockefeller; it’s OK as a single chapter but would be better with two. The middle chapter is sprawling, mixing together his early career and several environmental fights. It would be much better with separate chapters on his military and college careers, his work in federal trucking law, his early political work, and then his campaign against the waste slag that Reserve Mining was dumping in Isle Royale. The next chapter should focus just on his private law practice, with a separate chapter on his family history on Isle Royale (at 14 pages, it would make a good chapter). The current organization, in which he weaves among different topics in long chapters, just doesn’t work.
There’s a lot of good material in all that, but the reader has to do some work to reorganize each bit into its own story. That said, Merritt brings a distinctive perspective to events. The book’s story of Minnesota’s environment is grounded in his own family’s history, from the mines of the Iron Range to a summer cabin on Lake Superior. His passion for the land and its waters shines through.

Title: Not what I expected, i finish it but I don’t think I will read it again

Review: Not what I expected, I finished it but it did get somewhat dry in my opinion. The author often shared stories that involved well know figures or politicians but they weren’t particularly interesting. I did learn some little fun pieces of information.this book has more of a political focus than an environmental focus in my opinion.
