The Unnatural India, 70 years of Independence and Unity

‘At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will wake to life and freedom’, said Nehru in his Tryst with Destiny on the eve of India’s independence. But long before India’s wake many predicted that either it will sleep forever or it will be awake for a short time. Pioneer of them was Sir John Strachey from Europe. His belief was that India was merely a label of convenience that a name given to a great region including a multitude of different countries.
No country such as India will remain according to the European ideas. It was his judgement based on his continent’s history where many regions of more or less equal to the size of Indian states were trying to emerge as a country. Moreover many regions in Europe were resembles Indian states having language, culture or even geographical conditions of their own. Based on these assumptions many predicted India will too remain as a land of many nations like Europe.
India might resemble Europe but India is not Europe. It’s not like any other European country and European countries cannot fit to India. Its culture interwoven like a fine thread makes India special in the world. Feeling Unity in Diversity is not a reason to be broken down but was the essence to be ONE INDIA.
On the other hand a point of view that Indians cannot self govern is getting more nods. Rudyard Kipling’s “These grand people will go anywhere and do anything if led by us” got much acclaim. Winston Churchill in his speech of “Our Duty to India” said “ abandon India from the rule of the Brahmins” and predicted India will fall back quite rapidly through the centuries into the barbarism and privations of the Middle ages.
Puzzle whether India would stand one and rule itself is not only to the observers but also to the academic political science according to their axioms cultural heterogeneity and poverty does not make a democratic nation. Many reasons and point of views started emerging that India cannot survive as an Independent state for long. While for some

The heart hoped that India would survive, but the head worried that it wouldn’t.

In the midst of all these contradictory, logical and biased point of views a new nation called “INDIA” is born. With 70 years of Independence and moving ahead India and its people sent a message to the entire world we are humans who can achieve anything if we want to do and all the preconceived notions of different cultures cannot exist together is a false.
Proud to be an Indian.
