Enemy of the People

Has there ever been an occasion when someone was branded “enemy of the people” and the real villains WERE NOT the ones doing the branding? Who, if you looked even cursorily, were not themselves “the people” at all?

The famous instance in recent times where I am is a national newspaper headlining with that phrase about a group of judges, for daring to state, after due deliberation, that the law is the law. The law in question happened to be one that applied to Brexit. “Unelected” was bandied about too — as if the editor appointed by a tax-exile owner was somehow part of the democratic process.

Again I say — watch out for your Constitution.
