Unfriendly Black Hotties was my collection for Modista’s annual fashion show for 2015. Modista is a student-run organization at Kent State for students of color who are interested in the fashion world.
I had the pleasure of designing another collection for Modista, with this past year’s theme being Modista High: School Daze. I created a collection of four looks: two women’s wear and two men’s wear (a new field for me). My looks were inspired by a scene in a movie called Mean Girls, where the main character was walking through the cafeteria on the first day of school, looking for somewhere to sit. One of the cliques she walked by was the Unfriendly Black Hotties.
In my mind, the Unfriendly Black Hotties are the group of kids who show up to school and show out. They are intelligent and make good grades, but they’re mainly there to socialize and show off their latest fashions. They are the trendsetters that all the other students copy, and sometimes they are the trouble-makers that the teachers love to hate.
I feel that I accomplished the attitude that I was going for with my looks, and I definitely received the positive feedback from others who thought so as well.
