As one of those 4 “California country girls” in bras and overalls who modeled for that 1991 cover — and who went on to work as a photo stylist and writer for the magazine — I can attest that it was a truly ground-breaking publication. We didn’t always realize the history/herstory we were making; a lot of the time, we were just putting out there what we thought was hot and sexy and not otherwise available at the time. But it was an exciting time, and I think the magazine was a place that made an effort to show diverse images and a wider range of women’s sexuality than was available in those pre-Internet times. Glad to know the publication isn’t forgotten by today’s young women. You may think you invented everything edgy, sexy, and gender-queer, but you have your wild sisters now in their 50s and 60s to thank!
