The plans on the left show the transition between the previous design and the final plan. Main changes included clarifications in relation to the north of the site, building over the train station, adding in laneways to allow for more sunlight and straightening of the left residential building edge.
I wanted to make sure my key moves were relevant to my vision, urban design principles, opportunities and constraints. Sketching these ideas automatically established the key moves I would need to take in order to successfully and safely activate the site.
Chosen key moves: Pedestrian priority, green space, access and connections.
One thing I really want to achieve through the redevelopment of the Karangahape site is pedestrian prioritization. This comes as inspiration from my New Regent Street Precedent Study, which was successfully pedestrianized in 1994 and connects smoothly with the surrounding streets.
