I think the issue is neither ‘Leftist’ nor ‘Rightist’, but leadership. We are unlucky to live in an age in which there is a genuine poverty of leadership. A leader with real convictions, intent on solving problems, will make an impact for the better regardless whether he is of a ‘Leftist’ or ‘Rightist’ persuasion. So what do I mean by a leader with conviction?

It’s difficult to give a clear cut definition that would satisfy those of us of ‘Leftist’ or ‘Rightist’ persuasion. But this much I know. I know from experience that a leader with conviction is something like a lighthouse-keeper; for a lighthouse-keeper in order to do his job properly must be out at sea, nobody can suggest to him that he had better light his candles a little later, or anything of the kind. He knows his duty which is borne out of clear convictions that led him to don the mantle of leadership in the first place; and therefore must keep his lamps burning. If he were to follow the opinions of the people on the shore, as is the case these days with the so-called opinion polls or focus groups, his light might be extinguished altogether.
