Thank you very much for this thoughtful contribution, Tamar. You skillfully highlight a reality which sadly bespeaks to the dumbing down in our collective education. For it has been found that if a great event such as the holocaust is to be kept in mind in succeeding ages, there must be some memorial of it. Else men will by degrees forget it, and even come to be dubious as to whether such an event did indeed take place.
It’s true that there are memorials a plenty, but what is the good of memorials if no one takes the trouble to teach their true import? I think education should not only help us understand our history warts and all, but also help us navigate treacherous waters, that is, today and tomorrow.
I endorse your conclusion. And, I speak with Anne Frank when she said: “How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.” We can all do our little bit everyday to improve our little corner of the world — starting today.
