The vision for SKINSKOOL came to me in 2016. I was in the mood to overhaul my entire skincare routine. I went to a Douglas store where I live in Amsterdam. Think Sephora, but German. Due to previous work in the beauty industry, I had been quite an avid reader of beauty blogs and considered myself informed about beauty happenings. But at the time of this particular shopping trip, I had lapsed a few months with my blog reading having just had a baby and was a bit out of touch with the beauty world.

The actual Douglas store where the idea of SKINSKOOL was born.

So when I walked into…

We all know one, or more.

We all know someone in our lives that we would label the skincare skeptic. They’ve said it once, they’ve said it twice — “Oh all skin creams are the same. Why are you wasting your money?!” While of course we know that this is certainly not true, all skincare is not created equal, we can understand why it sometimes seems like so many brands out there are saying the same thing. This coupled with the insanely large number of products on the market, there are bound to be products out there that are similar…

We admit we might be exaggerating just a little. But our takeaway is that even though skincare manufacturers are supposed to stick to INCI (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients) naming protocol for their ingredient lists, they simply don’t.

Brands are supposed to consistently apply the INCI protocol when publishing their product ingredient lists.

Is it just a lack of understanding of the rules? We think not.

Is there an actual penalty for not adhering to the protocol? Don’t think so.

It is much easier for brands to market their products as unique and exclusive if they list ingredients in non-standard ways. Consumers can’t compare ingredient lists easily in their heads and using different names for…

At the heart of our Skincare Compare Dupe Finder lies an algorithm that was developed by a really, really smart guy. When he’s not helping us disrupt the skincare industry and uncover hard to find luxury skincare dupes, he’s working on algorithms for the aeronautics industry. You know, rocket science type stuff.

Imagine the algorithm that powers Skincare Compare as a giant calculator that calculates a score for every product vis-à-vis each other to determine its similarity. There were many challenges in creating a platform that could effectively compare over 16,000+ products and growing. Our proprietary algorithm takes many factors…

Objective product comparison was not possible, until now.

I read an article a while back on Emily Weiss and why she started her now wildly successful skincare brand Glossier. She talked about the market being crowded with products but lacking in context. Well talk about a girl after our own heart, we couldn’t agree more Emily! Glossier has created context for their customers by being clear about how products fit into their customers’ daily lives and solving real-life beauty problems.

Our approach to delivering context is a bit different. Right now, brands purposely make it very difficult for consumers to compare their products and different ingredient lists. Ingredient…

Things always take longer than you expect.

So many products, so little context.

It doesn’t feel at all like it’s been 1.5 years since that night we put together the SKINSKOOL founding team at a King & Yonge Starbucks in Toronto. We had already been developing an outline for the concept 6 months prior to that meeting but it was then that all the technical and creative aspects came together. We had found our amazing CTO who was excited and understood what we wanted to do. …

Product comparisons in skincare impossible, until now.

Glossier has created context for their customers by being clear about how products fit into their customers’ daily lives and solving real-life beauty problems.

SKINSKOOL takes a slightly different approach to the context conundrum. We’re obsessed with product comparison and how to make this possible in skincare. Brands purposely make it very difficult for consumers to compare their products and ingredients…
