Major key alert!

For years, I had absolutely NO idea what DJ Khaled did for a living. I merely thought he hung out with rappers and producers while he occasionally slapped his name on the beginning of your favorite summer anthem. Once he started using snapchat, I was starting to get the full picture on Khaled’s talent. DJ Khaled is a connector and a damn good one to get the type of people he works with in the same room.

Before I go further, what is a connector? A connector is an individual who has the charisma to know a lot of people and act as a middle man in fostering projects. Let’s use an example to make it easier to understand. You live in New York City and know an amazing singer in Kingsbridge (BX) and a rising producer out of Crown Heights (BK). The chance of these two ever-crossing paths is low due to the sheer distance in between them. Enter you, the connector, in this scenario. You setup a meeting to foster a working relationship to allow music that otherwise would never be heard a chance to be created. This is what DJ Khaled does but on a larger scale.

My fascination with DJ Khaled starts from me looking at myself to understand what am I truly great at. I am not creative in the sense of being musically or artistically inclined. I am also not adept at sports despite the 6’3” frame (yes shun me I know). So what am I good at?

People.

I am truly a people person. From a young age, I had to maneuver quite a bit in the five boroughs with my father. My experience dealing with a wide array of people has helped me understand what to do to bring them together for work. Before Khaled, I wouldn’t even consider that would count as a talent. Things are different once you understand one of many great connectors making money off their ability; you still to ponder how you can do the same.
