Having worked in the ISP/telecom/data industry for the last 25 years I have seen companies with solid fiber business models flourish, and other companies fail in spectacular fashion with horrendous business models.

The demand is real. The need for synchronous bandwidth continues to drive the marketplace. Cloud-based software applications are forcing businesses to to adopt and require fiber throughout the midwest in places like Des Moines, Iowa, Columbia, Missouri, Hutchinson, Kansas to name a few.

In Des Moines there are multiple local cable/internet/telephone providers that continue to expand fiber networks with very solid business models. They don’t perform any fiber builds until customers agree to cover the construction costs to deliver the last mile of fiber service. These solvent companies have learned the hard way that “speculative, promising or potential” fiber customers are truly the bubonic plague of the Internet Service Provider industry.
