I wouldn’t call notifications a dark pattern – those are about deceiving users. In my view, notifications are more like spam: heaps of information of which only very little is relevant.

One problem as I see it is that notifications are on or off… the level of control you get is so limited. Others problems are lack of contextual awareness, lack of understanding about what makes me tick, and that marketers see notifications as Yet Another Channel to shotgun messages at users. In aggregate, this turns notifications into noise.
