While the Japanese government tried to negotiate in May, they were ready to surrender once the USSR declared war as they had promised. It was in July, but I can’t recall the exact date. Harry S (for nothing) Truman ignored Japanese entreaties accepting unconditional surrender (which had nothing to do with the Pacific theater anyway). Harry was bound and determined to nuke Japan, not because of the war in the pacific but because he wanted to show Uncle Joe Stalin who was boss. Real histories lay out these events quite clearly.
