Phoenix Finds: Handyman’s Candy Store

A self-proclaimed “Thrifty Lady”, this is one of my local favorites for saving money on home improvement projects!

Also known as “Building Materials Outlet”, this 80,000 square foot nondescript warehouse is packed with overrun and discontinued goods in many categories — doors, windows, cabinets, countertops, trim, lighting, plumbing and more!

Over 250 Manufacturers and distributors send their overstocked and discontinued goods to this liquidation outlet to sell at deeply discounted prices — much like TJ Maxx or Marshall’s, it’s never the same place twice! If you see something you like, buy it — they probably won’t bring more into stock, and once it’s sold, it’s gone for good.

90% of their merchandise is brand-new — some are returned goods or slightly damaged — so take a careful look before you commit. Sales are “As is”, they do not accept returns or exchanges, and be sure to measure and confirm your new treasure is precisely what you are looking for!

Building Materials Outlet sells on a consignment basis, and adds a 12% fee to your purchase. They accept cash and all major credit cards — you need not be a contractor or retailer to purchase goods here!

Some of my best finds here have been cabinetry — for laundry rooms, garages, bathrooms….full kitchens available too! (I haven’t had an occasion to need THAT many cabinets…yet). I also picked up an 8' solid mahogany unfinished door that I stained and hung as a barn door. The cost? $80! Incredible values abound.

I visited again 11/10/22, in search of a slab (solid surface or wood) for a dining table. Sadly, they didn’t have the perfect option for me this time — I do need a very obscure size — yet they were fully stocked with high-quality cabinets, butcher blocks, and gorgeous iron doors! Plus unique items like stained glass windows, free-standing tubs, and beautiful pendant lights.

Located in an industrial section of Phoenix, Handyman’s Candy Store is a no-frills warehouse, so don’t expect upscale signage and plush atmosphere. What it lacks in ambiance it makes up for in VALUE.

The Phoenix Warehouse is south of the I-10 off of 32nd Street, and if you aren’t in Arizona, you can also shop their Eagan, Minnesota or Pensacola, Florida locations!
