Go With The Flow in Marvelous Hot Air Balloon

Hot air balloons portray a beautiful sight like jellyfishes effortlessly soaring across the sky. You might have come across its vision in some magazines or perhaps, the internet; but have you ever wondered how these humongous balloons defy gravity and unlike any other flying machines, soar across the serene sky?

Hot air balloon ride is one of the oldest modes of transportation that was out. The concept came up from two French brothers: Joseph-Michel and Jacques-Etienne Montgolfier, about two hundred years ago. A public demonstration was carried out by them on June 4, 1783 with the encouragement of King Louis XVI. This prototype balloon proclaimed a height of about three thousand feet and slowly descended down. The people were left dumbstruck witnessing a giant balloon floating across the sky which they had never seen before. Funny thing is, a few months later, the hot air balloon was launched with its very first passengers, a sheep, a duck and a rooster.

Jean-Francois Pilatre de Rozier, a science teacher and an adventurer; and Francois Laurent of the marquis d’Arlandes were the first humans to participate in one of the first ones to undertake the adventure balloon rides in the world. Benjamin Franklin happened to witness this first flight as well. The balloon soared above Paris, above the famous Notre Dame and Saint-Sulpice to land safely on farmland away from the city. Elizabeth Thible is the first woman to fly a hot air balloon in the following year who sang opera music during the duration of her flight. Frenchmen Jean-Pierre Blanchard and American John Jeffries were the first ones to cross the English Channel in a hydrogen balloon. Though rare, the first balloon casualty took place when Pilatre de Rozier and Pierre Romain tried to steer a combination of hot air and hydrogen hot air balloon across the English Channel.

Hot air ballooning gained its popularity in the sports domain until World War I which started hampering the requirement of Hydrogen in terms of expense and difficulty to acquire and were experimented to come up with various other alternatives. The Americans started using a specific kind of Nylon fiber filled with liquid propane gas. This has led to hot air ballooning to happen throughout the world.

The science behind the floating balloons to maintain their buoyancy is the fact air molecules expand and move away from each other on application of heat, in our case, provided by the sun. As the amount of hot air increases, it makes the balloon lighter causing it to ride towards the sky. There are burners placed under the envelope, the fabric balloon that holds the air, which heats the propane gas inside the balloon. The Nylon used in making the balloon has a high melting point.

The pilot and the passengers stand in a gondola basket under the balloon which is usually made out of wicker, a light and flexible wood. The hot air balloon is steered as per the air currents. The height of the balloon can be steered as per the release of flame or the escape of air through a gas valve.
