Frenchmen Jean-Pierre Blanchard and American John Jeffries were the first ones to cross the English Channel in a hydrogen balloon. Though rare, the first balloon casualty took place when Pilatre de Rozier and Pierre Romain tried to steer a combination of hot air and hydrogen hot air balloon across the English Channel.
Hot air ballooning gained its popularity in the sports domain until World War I which started hampering the requirement of Hydrogen in terms of expense and difficulty to acquire and were experimented to come up with various other alternatives. The Americans started using a specific kind of Nylon fiber filled with liquid propane gas. This has led to hot air ballooning to happen throughout the world.
