‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time’ by Mark Haddon

The book is impeccable. It is an adventure by an autistic boy called Christopher. He found that his neighbour’s dog was stabbed by a fork one night and he decided to solve the mystery on his own. The writer successfully described how much effort parents have to pay to look after an autistic child. And sometimes it was too exhausting that those impatient dad or mum will leave him. Besides, Mr Haddon portrayed the mind of Christopher in detail and it is really moving.

One thing I must mention: When Christopher was going on a trip to find his mother, he can be killed easily as he could not look after himself. But Mr Haddon is so good-hearted that he arranged a happy ending for Christopher.

This book has repeated the notion here and there that we must try to think from the point of others. It is true that you have your own way of living and liking. Yet, your actions and words may hurt the others. Concessions are expected, either you like it or not.

Here are some excerpts from the book:

‘I think prime numbers are like life. They are very logical but you could never work out the rules, even if you spent all your time thinking about them.’

‘Loving someone is helping them when they get into trouble, and looking after them, and telling them the truth.’

‘People go on holidays to see new things and relax, but it wouldn’t make me relaxed and you can see new things by looking at earth under a microscope or drawing the shape of the solid made when 3 circular rods of equal thickness intersect at right angles.’
