Frustrations of Financial Aid
Financial Aid Difficulties
Grant Green is a senior at Morehouse College. For the past three years, the financial aid office at Morehouse College has always given Grant a very hard time. To Grant, it seems as if the financial aid employees has a personal grudge against Grant, but as Grant discusses his frustrations with his friend Tre and Grant he realizes it’s not just him that encounters problems with financial aid. Grant grew very impatient with going to the office because the line was always so long so he decided to pick up the phone and try to call the office. He figured this would get him a much quicker response… Grant was wrong. After being prompted to wait for the next available agent by an automated voice system, Grant waited on the phone for about an hour. After realizing nobody was going to pick up the phone, Grant grew furious and decided to try to go up to the office again.
As Grant arrived at the office, he read a sign on the door that said, “closed for lunch, will retune at 1:30pm.” Grant did not understand how the financial aid office was closed for lunch because it seems like they never do work in there, he wondered how they possibly needed a break. Grant went to grab some food and waited for 1:30 to arrive.
After 1:30 arrived, he went back to the financial aid office with Tre and the hallway was already filled with students waiting. As Grant walked inside to “take a number,” he decided to call the office while he was in there to see what would happen. After he dialed the number and put the phone up to his ear he noticed something. Grant noticed that the phone was ringing in his ear but did not ring inside of the financial aid office. “These people turned their ringer off,” Grant thought to himself. Grant did not understand how the people in financial aid possibly wanted to genuinely help people but kept their ringer off so they wouldn’t know when people were calling them.
After calming himself down for about ten minutes, Grant decides that there’s nothing more he can do but to take his number and wait. Grant grabs “G85.” Grant looks at the prompter that tells what number they’re on and sees 73. Grants get excited then hears the secretary yell “F73!” “No way!” Grant thinks. Grant quickly realizes there was nothing more that he could do besides sit and wait for his number to be called. Time passes, and Grant finally hears “G85!” “Finally” he thought to himself. “How may I help you?” “My name is Grant and I was chosen for the verification process for fafsa and I was just wondering the status of my financial aid.” “Okay, your financial advisor will be right with. Write your name down and take a seat.” Grant realizes there are at least twenty names ahead of him so he decides to get up and leave cause he couldn’t take it anymore.
