Skyland Ventures Joins Taiko’s Type1 ZK-EVM Funding Round
Skyland Ventures (Headquarters: Shibuya-ku, Tokyo; General Partner & CEO: Yoshihiko Kinoshita, hereinafter referred to as SV) has announced its participation in the funding round of Taiko, a fully decentralized Ethereum-equivalent (Type 1) ZK-Rollup.
As a result of its use of the Ethereum execution environment, Taiko is called a “ZK-EVM”. When it comes to ZK-EVMs, various players are often discussed collectively, but in reality, there are significant differences in their degree of compatibility with Ethereum.
Taiko is classified as a Type 1 ZK-EVM, as it has the highest compatibility with Ethereum among these solutions. Hence, developers on Ethereum can migrate dApps to Taiko without any changes whatsoever and use existing tools for Ethereum directly on Taiko. Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, has stated that Type 1 ZK-EVMs are ideal for roll-ups as they can reuse much of the infrastructure and that they are the ultimate answer to making the Ethereum layer 1 itself more scalable.

I had the pleasure of meeting Taiko’s founders last summer, and after engaging in numerous online and offline meetings in Singapore and Lisbon, we have ultimately decided to support their innovative endeavors. ZK-EVM is attracting attention as a solution to Ethereum’s scalability problem, and several projects will launch their mainnets this year. The difference between these projects and Taiko is that it is a Type 1 ZK-EVM. In other words, it can be implemented without changing the current Ethereum system, making it completely equivalent with all Ethereum-based applications, open-source, fully decentralized, and permissionless, allowing anyone to become a node, prover, or proposer.
