Roadmap
We’re excited to release the first details of our roadmap! We’re striving to build a next-generation layer 2 powered by Cardano. With our data availability network, building dapps on Cardano will be easier than ever before, with unprecedented access to throughput, affordability, privacy and more.
Our team spent the week networking at ETHCC Brussels. Amongst our many friends and supporters, we took the opportunity to finalize our roadmap, seeking invaluable advice every step of the way.
Present
We are currently in the process of carefully selecting developers — a pivotal moment in our journey. We’ve witnessed projects falter due to mismatched or inadequate development teams, and we are determined not to repeat those mistakes. Our meticulous approach means we’ll continue reviewing applications over the next few days.
Meanwhile, Faré, our founder and lead architect, has already embarked on our first feature: Erasure Coding. Our progress will be transparent and continuous, with weekly updates on Twitter, Discord, and Github — where we’ll not only push code but also provide detailed explanations.
Expect insights into our R&D efforts through brief videos, where Faré simplifies the week’s developments for Gauthier. These updates will showcase our commitment to innovation and community engagement.
Testnet Features
Looking ahead, our roadmap to the v1 testnet includes essential features such as:
- Network Gossip
- Multisig & Merkle Proofs
- Erasure Coding (currently underway)
- Smart contracts on Cardano L1,
- Auctions for Bandwidth
- Payment Protocol
- Security Studies
- Proof of Authority — a prerequisite before we achieve critical user mass by year’s end.
Testnet Timeline
We estimate we’ll have a limited release version ready for private testing in Q4, where the first Sky nodes will be able to help maintain the network. We expect a public testnet to also occur later in Q4 2024.
Sky Nodes
We are currently accepting applications to become apart of the first cohort of Sky nodes. There is just 1 day to apply until the deadline, and there are currently over 150 applicants.
Mainnet
Simultaneously, ongoing design efforts will shape subsequent mainnet features: consensus mechanisms, pub/sub protocols for robust Data Availability, authentication and smart contract virtual machines, token management, staking mechanisms, committee selection, and the transition to proof of stake — culminating in a mainnet by late Q1 2025.
Beyond scalability, we’re committed to porting Sky Protocol to diverse platforms and enhancing its capabilities with features like bootstrap functionalities, advanced Data Availability mechanisms, optional privacy via onion routing, nuanced auction dynamics, encryption support, and streamlined committee operations — all overseen by Faré’s technical oversight and Gauthier’s strategic leadership.
Alliances and Adoption
Another important initiative is to secure more partnerships and foster business developments: as you guys know, we at Sky protocol believe that DA layers can be so much more than a scaling solution and can also have BtoB business applications.
Peter and Alex, our financial and legal experts, are diligently paving the way for Sky Protocol’s token listing across multiple platforms and fostering bridges between Sky Protocol, Cardano, and potential collaborators.
