Ideally, no. But that takes both people having a full understanding that the responsibility is on both, that there is no shirking of duty, even when both are on watch, that survival means the sort of vigilance that is automatic, that comes as naturally as breathing, not that which must be cultivated. I grew up with the best possible examples of a partnership like this, but yeah, I’ve been on far too many excursions where leadership and responsibility is handed over to one and personal initiative, understanding and responsibility utterly abdicated.
