With the caveat that in writing within the voice of a character, these words add the same natural feeling to thought and opinion and observation by the character as they do for sparing use in dialogue. And that — as pointed out — the words that are used as filler in dialogue and thought, that of giving the character extra time to think through their responses, is a revealing of character and of motivation/reaction in suggesting those unconscious pauses.

Simple search and replace is never a good substitution for knowing — exactly — what is meant to be conveyed.

Writer of fiction and free verse. Pretty damned awful at both but it keeps me off the streets.
