How to read 20 minutes long articles in 10 minutes?

You must agree that many top articles on web are lengthy. If you just visit https://topmediumstories.com/ and open some random 4–5 links. You will find 2 out of 5 articles are over 10 minutes. And I am comfortable reading any articles which are of around 5–6mins but i sometimes feel its too much if its more than 10mins, may be because I visit Medium in my break from work, and i am comfortable reading something which don’t take all my break time. But at the same time I feel guilty when i realized that article has so many claps and yet i haven’t read and i wonder what’s in it but its so much and i bookmark that article and never open.

How many of you have opened and read the articles that you have tagged as #MustRead in the last year and never opened till date? Oh my! I knew it, none of us have time to go back and read it. We feel and associate reading article with bookmarking it. I believe feels relieved if you bookmark it and forgets about it.

Just for one experiment, i bet you will read an article you want to read if you don’t bookmark it, if you really want to read. But if you bookmark it, then forget it, you will never read it. This is the problem I have been facing from long time. I think many of you might have faced similar issue.

So what can we do about it?

So what to do?

Lets time travel a little bit and head to our flashback, Our good old school and college days:) Ah! What a days those were. I wish I could go back in time and cherish it. Let’s take a moment, close your eyes and just remember your close friends. Ok now, do you remember studying with them in school or college corridors just before exams? Hell yea! And you must have experienced this —

1. The toughest topic used to become so easy when explained by your friend isn’t?
2. There could be instances when you aced the exam just by hearing the summary of the whole chapter by your friend?

Aced it!

So let me tell you what happened in those two scenario -

  1. In first scenario you listened to your friend explaining the toughest topic and you remembered everything he told.
  2. In second scenario you remembered the summary of the whole unit and you could formulate the answer based on that.

My point here is, if we use the same technique whenever we are reading or learning new things we can remember them for long time and apply them when we are in need of it.
